To know

Explore the museum in its entirety, including its rich permanent collections and the temporary exhibition dedicated to mythologies, which is on display in the Marie Garay Room as well as throughout the main exhibition space. This is an opportunity to discover or rediscover the collections through the lens of these great founding narratives!
The first temporary exhibition since the reopening of the Bonnat-Helleu Museum in Bayonne, ‘Mythologies’ brings together myths that span human history, from Pharaonic Egypt to modern Japan, and from ancient Greece to the Basque mountains. Conceived in partnership with the Louvre Museum and with the exceptional participation of the Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac Museum, it brings together nearly a hundred works from all eras and continents.

It will complement your exploration of the museum’s permanent exhibition, which showcases a remarkable collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, works of art and archaeological artefacts. Spread over three floors, it houses works by Europe’s greatest artists: Rubens, Van Dyck, El Greco, Goya, Ingres, Delacroix, Géricault, Degas, Barye, Bonnat, Helleu… While openness and the breaking down of barriers are the watchwords of the architectural project, they are equally central to the visitor experience, which invites you to engage with the collection through the prism of emotion, surprise and discovery. Far from a single narrative or a rigid hierarchy, it offers an open exploration, where everyone can chart their own course and forge personal connections between the works in a sensory and intuitive experience.
