Being a Woman: Between Light and Shadow, the Place of Women in Art History

Presentation

From mythological goddesses to bourgeois portraits, the collections at the Bonnat-Helleu Museum offer a striking overview of how women have been viewed, idealised or constrained by the male gaze over the centuries. But behind these representations, a question arises: why are there so few works by women, and do those that do exist depict them as thinking subjects or mere objects of the gaze?
This tour invites you to wander through the galleries as if unravelling a thread: that of the power of the gaze as it shifts and rebalances.
